THE STORY
A family pool sized for Christmas Day and summer afternoons.
Mt Waverly sits in Melbourne's eastern belt — large blocks, big families, established homes. The owners came to us with a brief that's common to this part of the city: a pool for the kids, the grandkids, the in-laws, the cousins. Sized for the hottest week of the year, not the average day.
We worked the pool to the deck rather than the boundary. The geometry is generous — wide enough for multiple swimmers without crowding, shallow at the entry, deeper toward the far end. From the deck, the proportions read open rather than channel-like.
Inside, the pool is finished in a deep water colour that reads dark against the surrounding paving. Deeper interior colours mask debris better than light finishes, which matters on a pool that gets a lot of use through summer storms and leaf-fall.
The shell is poured concrete, sized properly so the geometry holds for decades. Equipment is housed away from the deck. Heating is sized for the season Mt Waverly actually uses — warm enough for spring through to autumn, with a cover that closes overnight to keep heat in.
