Inverloch · Bass Coast

Lighthouse

An architectural concrete pool for an Inverloch coastal home, built into the line of the house and the water behind it.

THE STORY

An architectural concrete pool on a coastal Inverloch block.

The Lighthouse home sits on an exposed coastal block at Inverloch. The brief that came to us, alongside the architects and the home builder, was simple. Put a pool into the build that reads as part of the house, not parked next to it. Frameless glass, low coping, and the coast left as the hero of the view.

The block presented the conditions a coastal site always does. Sandy ground, a moving water table, salt air carried directly off the water. We engineered the shell for those conditions before any tile was chosen, then poured it in concrete so the geometry could pick up the long, low line of the home rather than sit at standard rectangle dimensions.

The pool reads as one architectural move with the house, not two. The coping carries across as the same material family as the paving around the home, so the deck reads as a single surface. The fence is frameless glass, set as discreetly as the regulations allow, so the view through from inside the home is never broken. A sun island runs along one long edge, a shallow lounging shelf you can sit in with the coast in front of you. At the opposite end, a spa is built into the same concrete shell, with jets set into it for the colder months.

Inside, the pool is tiled in Kit Kat tile, finished to last in coastal water. It's the only finish that holds its colour and surface for decades on this kind of block. Rendered finishes don't. The equipment is hidden so the line of the home and the coast carries through, uninterrupted.

Completed December 2023. A few months later, the build was featured in Home Design and Living magazine.
