Burwood East
A pool and spa combination with deep Pacific blue tiles, designed for an eastern Melbourne family block.
THE STORY
A pool and spa, deep Pacific blue, on one shell.
Burwood East is a different kind of brief from the inner-suburb pools we build. The blocks are bigger, the homes are typically newer, and the pool-and-spa combination is what the families ask for almost universally. The owners here wanted both vessels but didn't want them reading as two separate things in the backyard.
We built the pool and spa as one concrete shell — not two. One pour, shared structural integrity, one piece of plumbing, one architectural line. The spa sits adjacent to the pool, separated by a low spillover wall that lets water run continuously from one to the other. The deck wraps both as a single surface.
Inside, both vessels are finished in deep Pacific blue tile. The colour reads cool and rich against the surrounding paving and holds its visual weight even on overcast days. Deeper blue interiors photograph better in afternoon light than rendered finishes do, and they hold their colour for decades where renders fade.
The shared filtration runs from a service area away from the deck. Heating is configured so the spa can hold a higher temperature than the pool — useful for after-swim use through cooler months.
Completed November 2022.
